Note:
This article continues our discussion of how an Assessment
Management System differs from other systems that can
create assessments, such as authoring systems and LCMSs.
For Part 1 of this article click here.
In an Assessment Management System the
question "item" is part of a larger item pool,
a database of questions that is structured by topics,
sub-topics and learning objectives. Assessment "instruments"
are assembled by gathering questions from the item pool,
and applying a wide range of presentation settings (timing,
randomization, feedback, review, etc.). These instruments
are also versioned, and the AMS can provide reports
on how individuals and groups performed on the assessment,
in any given assignment instance or over time.
For many organizations, the ability to
make specific and group assignments of assessments is
a critical business need. The AMS allows the creation
of both fixed and flexible "groups" of users,
who can be assigned an assessment or a series of assessments.
Because the AMS centralizes assessment
delivery and results, there is one repository that becomes
the master "system of record" - one method
for delivering assessments-of-record, one interface
for learners, one place to store and run reports. While
self-assessments created within e-learning courses provide
value as an individual measure of progress, summative
assessments in the AMS allow corporations to easily
access all relevant assessment information for every
kind of training event, in one central database.

Pedagogue Solutions works with clients
ranging in size from small companies and departments
up to large Fortune 100 companies.
All clients, no matter how small or large,
require that their student rosters be loaded into the
assessment system so assessments can be assigned both
at the individual and group levels. We work with several
methods of information transfer:
